Lafayette, La -- Work is now underway on the latest addition to Moncus Park. A groundbreaking ceremony was held Monday morning for the Paul A. Doerle Sr. Farmers Market Pavilion.
The new project will span more than 3,000 square feet, and serve as an open-air pavilion for the Lafayette Artisans and Farmers Market, which is held every Saturday morning.
"The farmer's market is instrumental, it's a new Lafayette tradition," said Moncus Park's Grounds Director Mark Hernandez. "It's kind of the new town square in Lafayette, and it gives folks access to healthy foods. It's a wonderful place for new entrepreneurs to test their products."
The new pavilion is named in memory of Paul A. Doerle Sr., who along with his father built a small produce distribution venture into the nationally acclaimed Doerle Food Services.
"Beyond business success, he was a community pillar in Acadiana, contributing to nonprofit organizations and charitable causes," a news release from Moncus Park states. "The naming of the Pavilion honors his enduring legacy of entrepreneurship, generosity, and community devotion."
Work on the new pavilion is projected to take one year to complete.Â
