Lafayette, La(KADN)-Â Lafayette police are currently investigating a Monday afternoon shooting that occurred near Girad Park.
"I like Girad Park, you know I like the recreational fishing. People are nice."
Though the park has always been peaceful for the parkgoer, hearing the gunshots last night in real time was a different experience.
"At first I thought it was some firecrackers, but then. I heard the semi, you can tell a gun how... A semi-automatic pistol goes off. You know and I hurry up and ducked down," says the parkgoer.
Sgt. Robin green says someone in a vehicle was shooting at two people who were walking on the ul campus, as shell casings were found at the scene.
Parkgoer Amy Comeaux says after hearing about the shooting, she was shocked. "Yeah, it's very surprising because you think of lafayette being a safe town and we don't have that going on here. You think of big cities possible, but not here."
But it's the children another parkgoer says could have been hit by a stray bullet.
"There are tons of kids that came to this park about two days ago. I would say a hundred kids after school and they are running around playing. I mean it could hit any kid, there are people walking around the park," says another parkgoer.
All believe the same thing, a possible police presence could help near the park.
"I don't know how they work but I think if they could come out here more and just be driving around or just be in the parking lot."
"Maybe add a few more officers to patrol. "
"I think more police would definitely deter. I just don't know how many police they have and they can spare during the daytime."
No injuries were reported. Lafayette police are asking for tips as they continue to investigate who is responsible for last night's shooting near Girad Park Monday night.
